McCloskey was formerly the coal, metals and mining (CMM) business at IHS Markit. When a competitor acquired IHS Markit in 2022, several divisions were excluded from the sale to ensure pricing competition in commodity trading. Dow Jones acquired the CMM business, along with price reporting agency OPIS, to form a new portfolio of energy information products alongside other Dow Jones brands such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, MarketWatch and Factiva.
